PRō Back to School Tips by Dr. Dave Vigerust

School is IN! Whether it’s in a classroom, on campus, or group learning, keeping your kids healthy is always important, especially NOW.  A healthy and strong immune system and the ability to recover quickly are critical elements to keeping you and your kids safe + your kids grades UP!

This month we chatted with PRōZE board Member + Immunology and Infectious Disease expert, Dr. Dave Vigerust, on what we can do to keep our kids healthy as they head back to school in the middle of a pandemic.

“It’s a critical time to protect our first line of defense right now- our immune system. There is a high exposure for infections, especially as kids go back to school. Teaching our kids to wear masks and practice social distancing is key, but one of the  most proactive things we can do for them, is to ensure they support their immune system with powerful nutrients.”

PRōZE TEAM: What are the top (3) things kids can do to stay healthy as they head back to school in the midst of a pandemic?

Dr. Dave Vigerust:

  1. Hydrate- drink between 50-80 ounces of water per day
  2. Get at least 7-8 hours of sleep (that’s why I love NODZZZ)
  3. Give the body great nutrition including nutrients like the ones that are in SHIELD- turmeric, ashwagandha and reishi mushroom. Taking our daily nutrients is simple… but it’s not easy to do as we’re all busy. BUT nutrition is a proven method to strengthen our immune system to allow our body to deal with any stress or insult.

PRōZE TEAM: Are there young individuals who are more at risk?

Dr. Dave Vigerust:

Those with respiratory issues or those who are immune-compromised. Also individuals that are overweight, have severe allergies, smoke, are highly stressed, as all of those factors affect the immune system.

PRōZE TEAM: What are some key nutrients you recommend?

Dr. Dave Vigerust:

The following are all basic supplements I would recommend to support the immune system:

1.Vitamin A (retinol) : 2,500 IU daily

PRōZE Tip: Take with a meal that has fat (avocado, nuts, meat) will help with absorption

2.Vitamin D: 5,000 IU daily

PRōZE Tip: Take with fatty meal and pair it with Calcium too

3.Vitamin K2: 50mcg daily

PRōZE Tip: You can find a supplement with Vitamin D and K2 together

4.Vitamin C: 2,000mg daily

PRōZE Tip: You can take up to 3,000-5,000mg, space it out throughout day

5.Zinc: 25mg daily

PRōZE Tip: Best as a lozenge, smaller dosages over time is best for absorption

6.N-Aceyl-Cysteine (NAC): 800mg per day

PRōZE Tip: You can find with Alpha-Lipoic Acid, another valuable antioxidant

7.Elderberry: 1 tsp (it’s a syrup)

PRōZE Tip: Keep in refrigerator

8.Probiotics (at least 5 billion CFU)

PRōZE Tip: Find a probiotic with multiple strains, Lacto and Bacilus strains

9.Quercetine – 25mg

PRōZE Tip: Buy in capsule form, the powder drinks can stain clothes
