CBD & THE IMMUNE SYSTEM

No one wants to get sick. The runny nose, sore throat, and the aching body are all feelings that can bring down anyone’s day. To avoid catching the common cold, people take many precautions, such as vitamin C tablets and drinking lots of water. In the unfortunate circumstance that you do get sick, many over-the-counter medications and holistic rituals exist to ensure your time under the weather is limited.

But what if I told you there is something new to this game? Something that could possibly prevent you from getting sick or could help your body recover when you are.

Well, this possible miracle molecule is CBD.

cbd: the preemptive strike.

Taking CBD to avoid getting sick could be a viable option. Research suggests CBD has anti-anxiety and destressing properties (read about it here) thanks to its increasing of the endocannabinoid anandamide. This allows for a constant feeling of focus and calmness. A little stress is okay, and often motivational, but chronic stress has been shown to weaken the immune system. [1] In eliminating stress, one is less likely to overwork the immune system and fall victim to the common cold, or even worse.

how cbd works in the immune system

The CB2 receptors in the endocannabinoid system (read about it here) are localized mainly in the constituents of the immune system. Although CBD does not directly interact with these receptors, its existence allows for immune system modulation. This is because CBD interacts with T-cells and dampens their response. [2] T cells exist in the immune system to fight infections and viruses. While their efforts are valiant, T cells cause inflammation when they are protecting the body from the invaders. All the symptoms you get when you are sick are signs that your immune system is in fact working.

As kind as it is for the T cells and clan to help you fight off infection, it still sucks to be feverish and achy. CBD, in all its immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory glory, can come in to at least lessen the severity of symptoms. Thusly, taking CBD during the duration of your sickness may offer some alleviation from all the gripes.

Furthermore, CBD is thought to increase the body’s natural concentration of endocannabinoids. One endocannabinoid, 2-AG, is thought to exist as a mediator in the immune system. [3] CBD could be increasing the amount of 2-AG, which means more control of the immune system for your body.

recap

There are many potent and powerful medications and supplements for preventing disease or fighting it when it comes. CBD can come into play as a helping hand in modulating stress and anxiety that weakens the immune system or reducing immune system response in the case that sickness does occur. Many studies are still to come, with many possibilities for exploring CBD’s uses for common illnesses, but what knowledge does exist is promising.
